THE GAME
Above Snakes is an open-world survival game developed by Square Glade Games and published by Crytivo. After an accident destroys an entire village, our character's mission is to survive and try to find survivors, building a house, crafting weapons and tools, and helping anyone she can along the way. All this while building the map around her, placing each piece of land as she sees fit.
MY IMPRESSIONS
With a variety of activities to complete, Above Snakes is a survival playground. This is because you're the one building your world, with world blocks that you "craft," each with its own characteristics and will provide you with a different type of resource. Therefore, it's important to consider where to position each piece, as some can only connect to others if they are the correct biome continuity. For example, if a piece has one side filled with water, it can only connect to a piece that continues that watery section. The constructions you can create are quite complex, as you can build in any shape you desire. You receive quests when you encounter survivors, who ask you for favors. Both the survivors and your quest objectives will be found in the terrain blocks you acquire.
Your character has hunger, thirst, sanity, and sleep, so searching for resources and shelter is essential. The variety of foods that can be created makes you want to try a little bit of everything to discover new recipes. Combat is simple, with rolls to dodge enemies, which can be both animals and zombified humans. The game is in Brazilian Portuguese, which helps understand the story being told, even if it isn't particularly engaging. Ultimately, Above Snakes will be a great game of exploration and discovery, with curiosity alone to keep the player going.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Like any good open-world game, you'll find plenty of objectives and achievements. Collecting a certain number of resources, dying in different ways, accumulating money, cooking different foods, and reaching a reputation level are just some of the tasks required to earn achievements. And considering that one of the achievements is about completing 365 days on a journey, it's safe to say that achieving 100% of the achievements in Above Snakes will be a lengthy task.
CONCLUSION
Above Snakes is a game that seems more interesting for its premise than its story. Once you're free from the tutorial, you're left wanting to experiment with what you can do and where you can go with what you've been shown. Because it's a very open-ended game, you might feel unchallenged if you can't find anything to do. Despite the freedom to create the world as you please, this can be a double-edged sword and turn off some players who won't feel compelled to create their own challenges.
