Review: Curse Rounds

Fast-paced roguelike with unique curses, a Brazilian game inspired by classics like Binding of Isaac.

GAMEPLAY / VISUAL

First of all, everything here is visually black and white. This is a unique and interesting element that gives the game personality, but it can make it harder for new players to distinguish objects, since absolutely everything looks very similar. It’s not exactly a problem, but even a minimal color palette could help introduce new players more smoothly.

Gameplay up being not very varied. The feeling is that we don’t have much real choice in what to do, since we rely on luck after each boss fight to choose between two cards that may or may not be useful. There’s also the luck factor with items that drop from the washing machine, which may or may not fit the specific build we’re aiming for. The limitation of bosses weighs heavily, as there are only a few and they repeat until the end of the game.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In about an hour of gameplay, I was able to unlock all the achievements. This shows that there are no long or complex challenges, but at least the developer avoided the trap of creating grindy time-based or collectible achievements, respecting the scope of the game itself.

Resume

Despite its flaws, Curse Rounds manages to deliver a pleasant challenge that can be completed in just a few hours. It can be fun, but the repetition of bosses and lack of variety hurt the experience. The visual style is striking, but it can’t sustain the game on its own, which could have been more ambitious. Inspired by Binding of Isaac, the title ends up somewhere in the middle: it’s not bad, but it doesn’t reach the potential it could have if its scope had been doubled or tripled. In the end, we have something decent that entertains, but doesn’t stand out.

Score:6/10
