Review: Frostpunk 2

Face an endless winter filled with conflicts and challenges in Frostpunk 2, the highly anticipated continuation of one of the best strategy games of all time.

.

GAMEPLAY / VISUAL

For those who have yet to explore the icy world of Frostpunk, this RTS (Real-Time Strategy) presents a distinct scenario: the enemy is not hordes of orcs or guerrillas, but the relentless cold and the consequences of a society in collapse, striving to rebuild. Even with differing opinions, survival is the common goal.

Frostpunk 2 expands on the mechanics of the first game, providing a denser and more complex experience. Here, management extends beyond the confines of the base, giving players the sensation of being a governor of a frozen New London. The decision-making, political, and voting systems have been completely reworked, introducing new laws and their consequences, reflecting the hard work of the development team.

Visually, the game maintains the beauty of its predecessor, now with increased visibility that enhances gameplay. The more distant camera allows for broader management of various problems and activities. With drastic changes in scales, laws, and research trees, it’s essential to detach from what was learned in the first game. Here, decisions impact the macro rather than the micro. Those who cannot adapt may find Frostpunk 2 inferior to the original, but the question arises: what would be the logical path for the game’s evolution, if not through this transformation? My experience so far has been pure satisfaction.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The achievements in Frostpunk 2 are challenging, in every sense. Many accomplishments involve meeting objectives within specific timeframes, which can be frustrating, but the quality and specificity of each achievement are remarkable. Each accomplishment is unique, demonstrating the care and planning from the development team, who clearly dedicated time and effort to create an engaging achievement system, unlike many games that release achievements without a clear structure.

CONCLUSÃO

Analyzing Frostpunk 2 is a true delight. After years in which RTS games seemed dormant since Age of Empires III (2005) and, even with the impact of Starcraft 2 (2010), the genre lost some of its strength. The first Frostpunk, however, came to redefine the genre, and its continuation was surprisingly revealed with an impressive CGI teaser.

Frostpunk 2 is undoubtedly the major RTS release of 2024. It is an exceptional game, well-developed, that meets all my expectations. The only downside is the lack of more detailed information about specific objectives. However, this limitation does not diminish my experience, which has been filled with joy.

Unfortunately, during the analysis, I was going through a home renovation, which limited my playtime, but I hope that over time, my hours of gameplay will increase and perhaps new complements to this analysis will appear. For me, Frostpunk 2 is one of the best games of the year.
