Review: Mangavania 2

Mangavania 2 is the sequel to the platformer where we take on the role of Yuhiko.

GAMEPLAY / VISUAL

Maintaining its pleasant visuals but with simplified gameplay, Mangavania 2 offers basic mechanics, featuring a bomb to throw and a rope to reach specific places. The game has completely abandoned combat to focus on an "Escape the Dungeon" style. Previously, Mangavania included puzzles that could keep players occupied for a few minutes; now, the goal is simply to reach the end of each level. So much so that, surprisingly, the game’s final boss is… a rock.

Compared to the original, Mangavania 2 has lost several features: we no longer have the bow and arrow, collectibles in the levels, keys, gems, elevators, moving platforms, or a variety of enemies that required combat to progress. These omissions significantly reduce the game’s depth.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Unfortunately, Mangavania 2’s achievements follow the same approach as the first game: at the end of each level, you earn an achievement. There are 20 levels in total, each one rewarding a single, undistinguished achievement.

RESUME

It’s rare for a sequel to be inferior to the original, but Mangavania 2 is one of those cases. This may be one of the most disappointing games I’ve reviewed for the site. Seeing so many features removed was disheartening; the game feels generic and simplistic, seeming to exist only to profit from those who enjoyed the first game to some extent.
