Fight the Pestilence and rid the lands of darkness so the kingdom may prosper.
THE GAME
No Rest For The Wicked is an action RPG developed by Moon Studios and published by Private Division. In the year 841, the king is dead and his son, Magnus, becomes the new king. Arrogant and inexperienced, the new king is strongly influenced by Madrigal Seline, leader of the church, who is very interested in the cursed plague called Pestilence, which has not ravaged the world for a thousand years, hoping that God will look favorably on him when he faces the plague. Our protagonist, a sacred warrior from a group called Cerim, is sent to Insula Sacra, where he must fight the Pestilence while getting involved in the dilemmas of the people and political battles that make his journey more challenging.
MY IMPRESSIONS
No Rest For The Wicked is one of those games that are difficult to master, requiring a lot of skill and reflexes to attack and defend at the right time, with limited resources. It's the typical game where you'll have to be very resilient and patient if you want to make the most of it. In my case, I haven't been able to time my parry so far, mostly because of my ability to not realize the exact moment to execute the defense, but also because of some other issues, such as the game's camera, which can be annoying and disruptive at key moments. Perhaps because of the genre, I didn't like the combat, although it has Souls-like elements, combining this with an aerial camera didn't convince me, much less excite me.
The game has a unique artistic style, with the characters represented by their own style that, in a way, reflects the dark and sad atmosphere that we find throughout the story. And speaking of the environment, it's very detailed, all the elements react to the game's climate, whether it's when a wind blows or rain starts to fall. The game is in Brazilian Portuguese, which makes it easier to understand some mechanics and follow the story that is presented to us. We have a very interesting narrative, placing our protagonist in the middle of the eye of the storm while trying to solve several issues in the region. In the city, it is possible to buy property, decorate it as you please and improve the city itself, unlocking advantages, such as access to new stores, for example.
However, what can be discouraging is the grind that the game will require of you. Both for resources and for creating items, you will have to repeat many processes to advance, without there being much variation in the map, since even in the earliest areas, after you level up, new enemies appear there, requiring you to revisit locations. For all the points mentioned, No Rest For The Wicked may put off some unsuspecting players, who want something more dynamic.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Unfortunately, the game does not have achievements at the moment. Since it is in early access, I believe that achievements will be added in the future, as the game has features that would fit very well as challenges and, consequently, achievements.
CONCLUSION
I wish I had liked No Rest For The Wicked more. The setting and story are exciting, but the gameplay and the need to grind balance the equation. Even though it is in early access and may still change a few things or two, I believe its core will not change. Let it be clear that this is something that does not suit my tastes and does not mean that the game is bad. There are games that are just not our style and that is okay. We should always test and have our own experiences with any medium. And yet, we can also see value in things we do not like, because not liking something does not automatically mean that you hate it. As soon as No Rest For The Wicked leaves early access, I will give it a second chance, because I want to see how much the game has evolved.
