Review: Shogun Showdown

Calculate each move and defeat different enemies in Shogun Showdown.

THE GAME

Shogun Showdown is a turn-based roguelike developed by Robatino and distributed by Goblinz Publishing and Gamera Games. With different characters, your mission is to defeat different enemies along the way to reach and face the Shogun, your final enemy. Plan all your movements well as your enemies are also preparing to attack you, each in their respective turn. During your adventure, improve your range of weapons and skills to have more possibilities for attacks and combos to reach your final objective.

MY IMPRESSIONS

Roguelike is a style of game that can go very well or very wrong, there is no middle ground. It's a genre that is made to be addictive, and if it doesn't achieve that, it will probably be a failure. Shogun Showdown is extremely addictive and wonderfully enjoyable to play. Considering it has deckbuilding elements, which is a genre that is currently saturated and few do well, Shogun Showdown uses this element very nicely. The turn-based combat, which takes place in 2D, requires strategy and can leave you in complicated situations, but which are rewarding when you manage to defeat enemies without taking damage, for example. The combinations of weapons and skills are very good, allowing for very satisfying combos. The possible improvements for both weapons and skills and passives are balanced between burdens and bonuses, but which allow, depending on how far you progress, to have a very strong build. The game is in Portuguese-Brazil, which helps to understand the description of each weapon and ability.

The art of the game is very pleasant, especially the colors used make everything more vivid. As you play, you will unlock characters that have different characteristics, weapons and starting skills, which means you can use characters that better suit your play style. Each time you defeat the Shogun, you unlock new difficulty levels, which make enemies more difficult and with additional characteristics. Additionally, you earn points to free up more cards to be used. There are also consumable items, which add another layer of strategy to your game. Put everything I said together and you will understand why this game is so addictive. It makes you want more and more, without being unfair or complicated, with a very good learning curve. Shogun Showdown manages to unite many aspects in an incredible harmony that, even in defeats, makes you satisfied with the game.

ACHIEVEMENTS

When it comes to roguelike, we know that you will have to play several times normally. Add achievements and you will play even more and have more challenges. In addition to more basic achievements, such as defeating some bosses throughout the game, you will have some interesting challenges to complete some achievements. Defeating a boss and dying in the same turn, dealing 25 damage in a single hit, beating the Shogun without using a healing potion throughout your run are just some of the challenging achievements possible. Furthermore, the game has a system of stamps that you earn by beating Shogun, which are acquired when certain requirements are completed. Naturally, there are achievements linked to stamps. As it is an extremely addictive game with a high level of replayability, many achievements will be made without being noticed. Others will make you play with an additional challenge, which are not impossible, but add an additional layer of difficulty. It will certainly be work to do 100%, but it will be extremely fun.

CONCLUSION

Shogun Showdown hooked me like no other roguelike had been doing lately. It's so enjoyable to play that even though I lost, I felt like it was my fault for playing badly and not that the game was being unfair. It's incredible how they combined so many mechanics in such a simple way and that's the secret to this game's success. For those who like roguelikes, like me, Shogun Showdown is certainly among the best of recent times. What makes me even more impressed: the game is in early access. I left this information for last to show that, even in early access, the game is complete. I wonder what else they will do to improve it, if we will have more weapons and skills, more characters, in short, with such a solid base, it will be easier to evolve. The developers are to be congratulated on Shogun Showdown and I highly recommend playing it, even for those who aren't a big fan of this style of game. You won't regret it, play and get hooked.
