Review: Typecast

Can you whistle and suck sugarcane? Well, I hope you're good at doing two tasks at the same time, because you'll need it in Typecast.

THE GAME

Typecast is a bulletstorm game developed and distributed by Gutter Arcade and Official Electric. You are surrounded by enemies with letters on their heads, what will you do? To type! That's right, to beat your opponents in this game you'll need to press the buttons indicated above them, while your screen becomes increasingly full of enemies. However, that's not all, while you defeat enemies, you'll have to dodge them and their projectiles as well. Defeat as many enemies as you can, make combos and use your powers to reach the top of the rankings.

Don't take your eye off the screen.

MY IMPRESSIONS

My first impression when I saw this game was that it would be an action roguelike and I immediately got excited. However, when I played the first few minutes, I realized that I had been completely mistaken. Do you know all the explanation I gave previously about what the game is like? Well, that's just it. As you advance, new enemies appear with different patterns and that's it. You still have a few more things, like collecting the letters that spell FEVER to help you or using bombs and slow motion, but the game ends there. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily. In this case, I was the one who set expectations that did not match what was shown. Does this mean we can eliminate the blame game? Neither did I, since I wasn't very excited. The game is not in Portuguese-Brazil, but that has little impact.

I feel like if there were power ups to improve your run it would be much more interesting. Something that would make you want to play more often and try new methods of playing. Putting a ranking in the game isn't exciting at all. There are few people who will want to break records. This is one of the worst ways to encourage players. And even the way the game is now, it feels empty. Something seems to be missing. Collecting the jewels seems pointless to me, even though I know what they are for. At least the game also has achievements, which may excite some players.

Don't despair, just press buttons.

ACHIEVEMENTS

As I said before, we have achievements to cheer you up or give you some goals. In this case, most of them are specific to some action in the game, be it defeating several enemies with a single key or reaching a certain number in your score. Basically, if you want 100% you will have to play a lot and get very good at the game, thus facilitating your journey in completing all the achievements.

Time to dodge.

CONCLUSION

I know that most of the reason I wasn't excited about the game was my fault, but it doesn't present anything that excites you in its premise. There are many typing games that do the job of being challenging, but with purpose. Unfortunately, rankings don't cheer anyone up. I couldn't get excited and play more than two games at a time, so I quickly left the game. I know the game isn't bad, but that feeling of "is that it?" left me discouraged.
