THE GAME
Wild Woods is a roguelike game developed by Octofox Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment. Take on the role of a warrior cat to protect your wagon during your journey through a dangerous forest. During the day, you search for resources to help you on your adventure, such as wood to light your furnace and fruit to heal yourself from the possible results of a battle. At night, you must protect your wagon from enemy attacks, which will come in groups to try to defeat you and damage your wagon. In addition, you must keep your furnace running, as in addition to generating light to see in the darkness, it also provides you with heat to face the cold night. Advance, collect resources, buy and earn improvements for yourself and your wagon until you reach your goal, whether playing alone or with up to four players.
MY IMPRESSIONS
The game mechanics are quite simple: you collect resources during the day and defend your cart from enemies at dusk. Armed with a sword, your cat will have to travel the entire path, without going too far from the cart, always choosing the paths he wants to follow based on what lies ahead. Wild Woods is that typical game that you can even play alone, but its potential only appears when played with two or more people. When I say it is simple, I mean it is simple, in all its aspects, from its controls to the mechanics of the cart. This is another factor that makes the game much more receptive to playing with any type of person, since it is an easy-to-learn game. The game is in Brazilian Portuguese, which makes it easier to understand some of the upgrades you can buy in stores, for example.
The game's art is very stylized and smooth, combining the cute aspect with the simple, so as not to fill the screen with information, since the game is already quite frenetic. In fact, it's likely that on your first playthrough, you'll be lost as to what needs to be done and what's happening, but you'll soon get the hang of it, as the pace remains the same. We have boss fights, which take place in arenas. Your wagon parks inside the arena, but still provides you with resources such as healing to help in the battle. However, be careful: it can still be damaged. And the game continues in this sequence of trips, culminating in an arena for battle and returning to the road. If you're defeated, you go back to the beginning and take nothing with you. Therefore, no two sessions will ever be the same.
ACHIEVEMENTS
There are several achievements in Wild Woods. Most of them involve major challenges to be achieved, such as winning on hard mode, winning without taking damage, or winning without getting cold at night. In addition, there are some specific actions that generate achievements, such as defeating the boss in a specific way or making the enemy hit their own companions. With these and other varieties of achievements, the game uses this feature as an additional challenge for players, which makes completing 100% of the achievements a difficult task.
CONCLUSION
I had a lot of fun playing with a friend, and thinking about whether the game would work for me if I played alone, I think it would lose its shine for me. The funny situations that happen when you play cooperative games make a huge difference to your experience. Wild Woods is in early access at the time I write this review, but it already has a trail of exciting new content for the game, such as the addition of a character, new enemies, and more improvements. Many people may not like to pick up a game that is still adding things, but I love to see games that have potential evolve, and that is what I see in Wild Woods. With time and new additions, it has everything to be an even more fun game to play with friends.
