Review: Before Exit Supermarket

Before reading this review, make sure everything is in order.

THE GAME

Before Exit: Supermarket is a simulator developed by and published by Take IT Studio!. It's already nighttime, and the supermarket is closed. Now, you, a lone employee, are the only ones tasked with closing the store, leaving everything tidy before leaving. And you better not forget any tasks, because your boss is watching.

You're going to have a lot of work...

MY IMPRESSIONS

Anyone who's worked in retail knows what it's like to inspect a store. Checking that everything is in place, whether there are any missing items to replenish, and so on. In Before Exit: Supermarket, you'll have similar tasks, one different from the other each night. Completing seven shifts completes the game. If you leave something unresolved, your boss will hold you accountable, and you'll have the option to restart that day. The game features twenty different scenarios, consisting of twenty different work nights that will require you to perform different tasks, such as restocking shelves, removing spoiled products, and disposing of trash. In addition to these different objectives, every day you must flip the "open/closed" sign, close all the doors, and turn off all the lights. At times, you might get a few scares, as some things happen that give a hint of strangeness, which even led me to believe the game had horror elements, but it was just my impression of being alone that betrayed me. It took me a while to understand Before Exit: Supermarket because, aside from a generic sign on the wall, the game doesn't teach you anything about what to do each day. You'll have to learn by observing what's wrong and trying things out through trial and error. Furthermore, the gameplay is uninspired and unattractive, as are the game's objectives.

The bathroom is also your responsibility.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Unfortunately, I had a pretty bad experience with achievements. Or rather, the lack thereof, since, apparently, achievements are broken on Steam. In other words, they're not working. That said, I can't comment on them in depth, but reading about them, they don't seem difficult to complete and give you a reason to play more often, something the game itself doesn't excite you about.

The whole supermarket just for you... to work!

CONCLUSION

Before Exit: Supermarket has an interesting idea, but poor execution. While there are interesting elements, like some scenarios where you might even expect scary moments, they're not enough to excite. With achievements not working on Steam, I had no desire to try more of the game after finishing it, as there's no valid reward for the player. A Before Exit: Gas Station has already been announced, and I hope this first game served as a learning experience and improvement for future releases.

SCORE: 5.0/10
