Review: Date Everything!

ree

What object in your house would you go on a date with?

THE GAME

Date Everything! is a dating sim developed by Sassy Chap Games and published by Team17. After your customer service job is replaced by an AI, you find yourself in limbo at your job, as they can't fire you. Then, you're surprised by a message from an anonymous person who decides to send you a gift: a special pair of glasses. And what's so special about them? Well, by putting them on your face, you can bring objects in your home to life, transforming them into people. Not only that, you can develop a relationship with them, whether dating, friendship, or even hatred. Talk to each one and discover interesting stories, while a larger plot revolves around the existence of these special glasses.

Your glasses also come to life.

MY IMPRESSIONS

The world of dating simulators is vast. You'll find a wide variety of themes in this genre, but perhaps no one has ever imagined the possibility of a dating simulator where your suitors are things you have in your house. Date Everything! delivers this crazy plot in the best possible way. With 100 characters (plus a few more, considering the DLC), you'll experience a wide range of dialogues and stories in which you decide whether it's dating, friendship, or hatred. With this variety of characters, we also have a wide range of sexual orientations and genders, validating all types of love. Furthermore, some stories address more sensitive topics for some, but don't worry, the game has a sensitive topic warning and asks you if you want to skip the dialogue or if it's okay to continue, thus avoiding triggering certain topics for its players, which I thought was nice of the developers.

Unfortunately, the game isn't in Brazilian Portuguese, which may put some people off, as the game is primarily text-based and you have to understand the context to respond appropriately. All the characters are magnificently voiced, majestically expressing the personality of each character they represent. The human characters' names are puns on the objects they are before transforming, and it's a lot of fun to discover each one. The art is impeccable, and it must have been a lot of fun transforming objects into people, injecting every detail and personality into their representations. The main story unfolds slowly and keeps you intrigued, even if what really catches your attention is the objects' stories. Naturally, some stories will draw you in more than others, but they all have their own well-developed themes. For dating simulator lovers, Date Everything! is packed with content and will keep you playing for a long time.

Is bringing your toilet back to life a good idea?

ACHIEVEMENTS

I must say that completing all of Date Everything!'s achievements will be a long task and will require a lot of attention. While some of them are about specific tasks or collecting items, there are three that will be the most tiring to achieve: achieving all the love, friendship, and hate endings, each in a single run. In other words, you'll need to play through the entire game at least three times, achieving each respective ending for each of the 100 characters. Therefore, achieving 100% of Date Everything!'s achievements can take a while.

There is a fine line between love and hate.

CONCLUSION

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of dating sims, Date Everything! proves that it's a genre that can surprise you. A game that respects diversity and still cares about the player when it touches on potentially sensitive topics. I had a lot of fun playing, especially with the puns on the characters' names. In fact, I really wish this game were in Brazilian Portuguese, just to see if they'd adapt the names as well, which would be amazing. With the game's success, I believe this translation will come sooner or later. I really like it when a game genre rises by thinking outside the box, and we can see that the developers of Date Everything! have done this very well.
