Review: Gangs of Asia

A game of territorial conquest and lots of fighting

Game

Gangs of Asia is an action RTS beat 'em up game where you control one of four available characters, all martial arts practitioners.

The game involves controlling your character and defeating enemies (in beat 'em up style), including main bosses (like your character) as well as other NPCs, while simultaneously conquering territories on the map. To conquer a territory, the player needs to be in front of the building for a certain amount of time, while also defeating the enemies that emerge from it.

Once you've conquered the building, you can upgrade it, and you also have the option to buy/upgrade more NPCs to help you defeat other enemies. With this, you can also upgrade these NPCs, as well as yourself, improving their health and attacks, and you can also buy some special moves that can be used (like a dragon that sweeps across almost the entire screen).

Why not just send a dragon across the entire screen, right?

It's also possible to build small structures to help earn money (which can be used to hire more NPCs or acquire more power).

My Impressions

The game itself is quite frantic, requiring the player to constantly be attentive to their resources and conquered territories, as opponents can quickly reclaim them if they aren't paying attention.

The game's aesthetic harks back to the classics, with its incredible pixel art. However, at certain points, and because the screen is full of resources, it becomes a little difficult to find them, especially with multiple opponents.

A lot is happening at the same time

Conquering all territories and unlocking all buildings and powers is quite a challenge, requiring some practice and patience, even in the tutorial (yes... I got a game over in the tutorial...), which might discourage some more casual players.

Conclusions

Gangs of Asis is a great game for those who enjoy the territorial conquest genre, and it also offers a bit of beat 'em up (so it's not just the same old point-and-click). Despite this, the game proves to be quite challenging, especially in its mid-game, where things can get quite complicated. The game is still in Early Access, but it's already possible to enjoy it.
