The Power of the Old Gods Reaches the Rewards Track

The arrival of Reign of the Old Gods brings 135 new collectible cards to Hearthstone, along with the new Assemble keyword and the Titan-forged constructs created by the Titans to fight the Black Empire. But before diving into the cards and the expansion's new mechanics, it's worth taking a look at the Tavern Pass, one of the first things we encounter when opening the game after a major update. It determines many of the additional rewards we can earn throughout the season.

This time, the Premium Track includes two Diamond Legendary cards, Ammunae and Rajh. That's an improvement over the previous expansion, which featured only one card of this rarity in the Pass. For players who enjoy collecting special card variants, this is already a notable change. The list also includes Golden M.A.D.R.E. and Golden Arkhaedas, with the regular version of Arkhaedas available through the free track, as well as two Golden copies of Mogu Warmaul.

CONTENT

The Premium Track includes:

  • Golden M.A.D.R.E. and Golden Arkhaedas (the regular Arkhaedas is available on the free track)

  • Two Golden copies of Mogu Warmaul

  • Exclusive cards that cannot be crafted or disenchanted: Assimilating Ooze, SC91 Carriage, and Primordial Lithodent

  • 8 new Hero Skins

  • 1 Card Back (Aman'Thul, according to the reward track) and 1 cosmetic Coin

  • 4 expansion packs + 1 Golden Standard Pack

  • The usual immediate 10% XP bonus, which increases as you progress through the track

MY IMPRESSIONS

The XP bonus remains the main practical argument for purchasing the Pass. Players who play regularly will notice the difference in progression speed, especially during the first few weeks of an expansion, when we want to experiment with new decks but don't yet have enough Arcane Dust or Gold to explore every possibility. The additional experience helps us progress through the free rewards track faster, increasing the number of rewards we can earn throughout the season.

On the other hand, I missed having Golden packs from the expansion itself. The Pass includes four Reign of the Old Gods packs, but the Golden pack is from the Standard set rather than the new expansion. The situation was similar in the previous expansion, Escape from Violet Hold. Still, considering the number of new cards and the interest that characters like C'Thun and N'Zoth generate within the community, it would have been nice to receive at least one Golden pack from the current expansion. It's not a dealbreaker, but it does make the Pass less appealing for players looking to invest in the new collection.

The eight Hero Skins also represent a decent amount of cosmetic content, although their value depends heavily on each player's preferred characters and styles. My recommendation is to check the full reward track before purchasing, especially since some rewards only become available at higher levels. The same applies to the exclusive cards: they're interesting collectibles, but they cannot be disenchanted for Arcane Dust if you don't like them or don't intend to use them.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Pass's main drawback is the absence of Golden packs from Reign of the Old Gods. It's also worth remembering that some of the advertised content is cosmetic or collection-focused, meaning not every reward will have the same value for players interested exclusively in building competitive decks.

On the other hand, the two Diamond Legendary cards, eight Hero Skins, and XP bonus make the Premium Track more appealing to players who regularly play Hearthstone. Another important detail is that the free track already includes Arkhaedas, along with Gold, packs, and other rewards. Therefore, more casual players can continue enjoying the expansion without purchasing the Pass.

The Reign of the Old Gods Tavern Pass follows a familiar structure, with rewards that support both progression and the collection of special items. The two Diamond Legendaries are this season's main highlight, while the XP bonus remains the most practical reason to purchase the Pass for frequent players. For more casual players, the free track remains a sufficient alternative.

SCORE: 7.5/10
