Review: Cosplay Club

If your dream has always been a magical girl, at Cosplay Club you can make it come true.

THE GAME

Cosplay Club is a turn-based tactical RPG developed and distributed by Behold Studios. Embody a girl who loves cosplay and goes to different events when, suddenly, you discover a magical backpack in the basement of her house. It belonged to her mother, who was a magical girl. Thus, the backpack, which has a life of its own, gives you powers and helps you on your adventures through events, battling alongside it and helping you become the best magical girl cosplayer.

MY IMPRESSIONS

Everything that comes from Behold Studios gives me a lot of expectations, as they developed Chroma Squad, which is one of my favorite indie games. Despite using a visual style that doesn't appeal to me, I still gave my vote of confidence and went after playing Cosplay Club. I must warn you that the game is in early access at the time of this review, so a lot can change. And it should, because what I found when playing Cosplay Club was a game with a lot of bugs. And that in itself ruined my experience. Invisible walls, buggy NPCs, loading screens that freeze and never come back. This and other small details really ruined my experience with the game. Cosplay Club is not yet in Portuguese-Brazil, but it certainly will be, as it is a Brazilian studio that develops it.

The game's theme is cool and very creative. The fun part of the game is putting together your cosplay. You will buy new parts to put together a new and more powerful cosplay, as it dictates your status and abilities. The only problem is that you have to put together a new cosplay every time you want to change something or add a new accessory. If there is an option for this, it is very hidden as I couldn't find it at all. If it doesn't exist, it should be added as soon as possible. The combats are simple and flow well, with a combined attack system with your allies. I didn't feel any high difficulty in my battles, they were all very easy to win.

What disappointed me was that the game seems to have no soul. All Behold Studios games are incredibly fun and funny, full of references. In Cosplay Club, I felt like I was playing a generic game. Nothing has weight, no character is captivating, the missions are irrelevant, there is no story there that holds you back. It seems like the game is going to be an endless cycle of "create the cosplay, go to the event, do missions that lead you nowhere, go back home" and that's not fun at all.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The game does not have achievements, but as it is in early access, we can expect them to be added later, as Behold Studios games always have achievements.

CONCLUSION

It pains me to say this, but this game is disappointing. I'm not going to slam the hammer, as the game is in early access, but it will be difficult for it to change much more than it is now. If it weren't for the references to Chroma Squad that we have in the game, like the cosplays and apparently taking place in the same universe as it, I wouldn't say that this game is from Behold Studios. I highlight the bugs, because they are things that really happen and that's what early access is for, but everything else is soulless.

In my opinion, it would be much better if the game was more linear, with a more consistent and interesting story, using cosplays as if they were unique equipment and not an unalterable build. The game had interesting potential, but the execution wasn't the best. It's all very confusing and unmotivated. Unfortunately, this time Behold Studios disappointed me. Is very.
