Review: Mullet Mad Jack

Can you save the princess in just 10 seconds?

THE GAME

Mullet Mad Jack is an action FPS developed by HAMMER95 and distributed by Epopeia Games and HAMMER95. In the distant future, humans need dopamine every 10 seconds or else they will die. With Mullet Mad Jack it is no different. Charged with the mission of saving a princess (who is actually an influencer), our protagonist must climb the floors of a building, destroying everything and everyone along the way. Every time he defeats an enemy, he gains more seconds of life so he can achieve his objective.

MY IMPRESSIONS

I'll start by talking about my biggest surprise with this game: the voice acting. Mullet Mad Jack is a game made by Brazilians and, logically, it's in Brazilian Portuguese, as expected. However, when I started the game, I had a pleasant surprise: all the characters are dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese. That in itself would be incredible, but I was even more happy to hear the voices because the voice actors are well-known to Brazilians. Just as the game is themed like an anime from the 90s, the voice actors chosen are renowned for many works from that era. Nostalgia aside, the game's aesthetics, both art and audio in general, are incredible, immersing you in a colorful and stylish world, including when we have some animated scenes, which make everything even more wonderful. The whole story of how humans and the internet merged and now everyone needs 10 seconds of dopamine to stay alive at all times is a critique of our current world, where you're either entertained by screens or you're out of date. This translates into a frenetic game with constant action, where at times you don't even know what's going on, but it's there, just like the amount of information we receive but don't even understand or notice. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but it's an analogy that works well for what the game presents.

As mentioned, the action doesn't stop while you play, because you have 10 seconds to live and you need to eliminate enemies to get more time. And there are many ways to eliminate enemies, ranging from weapon types to objects in the environment. The movement is light and makes you almost glide across the map, but when you hit an enemy, you also feel the weight of the blow and this makes the actions more enjoyable to perform. In the battles against the floor bosses, there is no timer, so you can just focus on the bosses' patterns. In addition, there are many stages in which the normal gameplay changes to something like a special stage, which gives a fresh feel to the game's story. Mullet Mad Jack is simply guaranteed fun, even when you lose and go back to the beginning of the chapter, you don't want to stop. It must be the dopamine.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Mullet Mad Jack's achievements are quite simple and straightforward. In addition to the story-related achievements and beating the game on all difficulties, there are also achievements related to improvements you get as you progress through your attempts, collected weapons, and specific actions, such as finishing off enemies or shooting their balls. The developers did a great job with the achievements, balancing their level of difficulty and complexity well. If you're looking for 100%, it'll be a lot of fun to get.

CONCLUSION

Without a doubt, an incredibly addictive game. It makes me very happy to see Brazilian game developers creating excellent games. And in Mullet Mad Jack we can see that they put a lot of care into both the visuals, which are wonderful, and the sound. The latter in particular, due to the dubbing in Brazilian Portuguese, was something that made me very happy, because in addition to using renowned voice actors, it also shows that they care about their Brazilian audience. The fast and challenging gameplay combined with all of this makes it very unique, like a game that will leave its mark on the world of indie games and, most likely, will be used as inspiration by many other developers. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is among the best Brazilian games of all time.
